PTA is a grass roots organization. All PTA units/councils in Nassau are part of the Region.

In order to better meet the needs of the over 395,000 members in the state, New York is
divided into 16 Regions, each headed by a Region Director appointed annually by the State
PTA Executive Committee, based on recommendations from members of their Region Board.
The Region Director may serve a maximum of three terms.

The Nassau Region Board is composed of officers elected by delegates at Spring
Conference, assistant directors and chairmen appointed by the Executive Committee in
accordance with the Region Bylaws, special assignees appointed by the Region Director,
past Region Directors, and members of the New York State PTA Board of Managers.

Nassau Region is an arm of the State organization.  The Region Director, as a member of the
State Board of Managers, keeps local members aware of statewide issues and activities and
brings to the State PTA the concerns of the Region, councils, and units in Nassau.

The sea horse was adopted as the Nassau Region PTA symbol in 1966. It was chosen
because the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound border Nassau on two sides and the
world famous landmark, Jones Beach, which features the sea horse, is located within the
county.

Nassau, with a membership of over 104,000, is the largest Region in the State with over 300
units and 37 councils within one county. Its units include Pre-K, elementary, secondary
PTAs/PTSAs as well as 46 SEPTA/BOCES units. There are fifty-six school districts in the
county and fifty-two have PTAs.

The Region offers conferences and workshops for leadership training as well as on special
topics as the need and interest arises throughout the year. It also offers educational
programs to better able its members to work for the children in their schools.

The Officers’ Round Table in June provides training for over 200 PTA leaders. At the
Membership workshop pointers are given to chairmen and presidents for their membership
drives. The Resolutions Workshop, prior to Convention, furnishes members with further
information and insight into the proposed resolutions and workings of Convention.
Workshops at Fall Conference help strengthen PTA skills. At the Presidents/Principal Dinner
in December, attended by over 550 people, presidents, superintendents, principals, school
board presidents, and teacher representatives can become better acquainted in an informal
atmosphere. Program and Cultural Arts Chairmen preview programs at the Arts-in-
Education Showcase they may present to the children in their school. Spring Conference is
the annual business meeting of Nassau Region where officers are elected and bylaws are
adopted.  Members attend a Ways and Means Showcase followed by a dinner at which
recipients of various National, State and Regional awards are honored.

PTA is an organization of many people working together for the welfare of children and
youth.
